Apple’s 10.3.3 Upgrade Bricked my iPhone 5c
Well, Not Really a Travel Blog Post
Having problems with my phone is not as exciting as writing about some of the awesome placed I get to travel. However having a working smartphone, while not required for travel, makes some things much easier. Like last minute booking of hotels, or flights, or even for getting an Uber.
On Aug 2nd I got a message that Apple had a new version of their IOS. It is a “minor” update from version 10.3.2. Typically I do a backup and instal updates about a month after they come out. This time It was closer to two weeks. Anyway, I did the update, and as soon as it was complete I noticed the touch screen was responding strange.
It would either not register a tap at all. Or when I tapped it would always open a specific folder on the home screen regardless of where I tapped. Trying to enter text because a nightmare as the auto-correct text would just start writing its own sentence. The update made the phone completely unusable.
My Android Saved me.
Fortunately for me when I was in India last year I bought a Moto G Android phone. So I switched the Sim card over and started using the Moto G. Normally I would be using the Android anyway as it works better than the iPhone in every other country outside Canada and the US. I only use my iPhone in North America because the Android strangely only gets 2G speeds there.
But batter in my Android phone is packing it in. I get only a few hours on a full charge. So both my phones are crapping out at the same time.
Back to the iPhone. I tried restoring to 10.3.2 while Apple is still signing that software. I loaded an old backup, but the problem persisted. With no other option while in Iceland I figured I would get out the big guns, so I started a text conversation with Apple. They had me restore the phone to brand new condition and not load any backup. The problem is still present.
As I write this i’m sitting in the Apple store i Brandon, Florida. The Genius is stumped on this. His recommendation is to replace the touchscreen for a cost of ~$130 USD. I pointed out that it is Apple’s fault that my phone bricked because all I did was install the recommended update. While my Genius said he sympathized Apple does not see fit to give two shits about this. They just want my money.
Imagine another technology company like Tesla. I buy a car and over time they continue to push updates into the car. One day one of the updates makes the turn signals stop working. When I go to them for help their solution is that I need to buy a new car. Maybe this is an extreme example, but I feel it is a great way to highlight my situation with Apple right now.
So now my dilemma is to discard my years of Apps and money I spend on Apple, and upgrade my Android. Or spend a fortune to replace the iPhone. I need more time to make the decision. Be prepared for a future blog post regarding my ultimate solution to this ridiculous technology problem.
My dream phone has the following features;
- Waterproof, or highly water resistant
- 5 inch screen
- 13 megapixel back camera and 8mp front camera
- Replaceable battery with a long life
- Good software sync solution
- Smooth user interface
If you have suggestions which way I should go please leave them in the comments!
