Milford Sound Day Trip
Milford Sound Day Trip
Two days ago I did a Milford Sound day trip. There was a whole lot of good on this trip as well as a bit of not so good. I did the trip with Mitre Peak Cruises. I chose them because the boat is smaller and the brochure said that they got closer to the shore so I figured I would be able to get better photos. They do not provide a box lunch, however they do provide coffee and tea.
The good part is that Miflord Sound is awesome. I got to see fat lazy seals laying on the rocks. I also got to see Penguins molting and hanging out with the seals. Which is kind of strange because the Penguins are seal food. Then again the Penguins looked pretty unhappy about having to hang out with the seals, but apparently when Penguins are molting the they really don’t like to move around too much.
The views at Milford Sound are amazing. I feel like I have been saying that everywhere I go in New Zealand. It’s just so dang beautiful here. It’s hard to see in photos but the surrounding mountains are super steep. In some of my photos there are traces of waterfalls visible. These falls only have water falling after a recent rain. it really makes me want to go back and wait for rain just to be able to photograph the falls.
There was a bunch of not so good stuff on this trip too. The first thing is that I didn’t get to see any dolphins. 🙁 ah well. From what I have heard its rare to see them, but I was looking forward to it anyway. I can forgive the dolphins for not showing up.
The really sucky part is the 6 hour bus ride to get to Milford Sound from Queenstown. Granted there are many pee stops, points of interest, and a half hour lunch break on the way. Still it felt like forever to do the bus ride. I was trying to sleep as much as I could on the bus. I am not a good bus sleeper so it was uncomfortable to say the least. By the time I got to Milford Sound I was exhausted from trying to sleep.
Even more sucky was the bus ride back. Again I tried to sleep, but this time the bus seemed to have some mechanical issues. the back axle was squeaking like crazy. Also the whole back of the bus was shaking. It felt like when I was on the boat the bus driver did some damage to the bus. Then, on top of that, the drive was going like a maniac along the road home. It was only a 4 hour drive back. But with the steep cliff on the left side of the road along with the excessive speed of the bus, and the constant squeeking and shimying it was one of the most uncomfortable rides I have taken.
AND, on top of that the bus had a glass roof. That meant that the sun was blazing into the bus on the whole trip, and the Air Con was set to low so the bus was hot as well as squeaking, shaking, and speeding along a narrow road with a cliff to the left.
The final sucky part is that the whole trip cost $160 NZD. So for a Two hour boat ride that was totally awesome, I had to endure a miserable bus ride, and fork over way too much money.
I would totally recommend the Cruise part of this trip if you get a chance to take it. However DO NOT start your trip from Queenstown. Instead start your trip from Te Anau. The drive is much shorter and you will have a more enjoyable trip on Milford Sound.
The last sucky part is while writing this post I noticed I accidentally deleted all the awesome videos I took of the trip.
Have you ever had a day trip that you couldn’t decide if you enjoyed it or just endured it? Comment in the section below.
