Second week on the road – Summary
This week had a lot less driving an a whole lot more relaxing. I spent the last 6 nights with friends in a house with 4 awesome cats. The relaxation I enjoyed was much needed. I had to recover from the previous week of driving and prepare for the next two days of driving 750 miles. Being able to relax in one place for so long also let me catch up on editing photos, sending post cards, and assorted paperwork.
On the drive from New Haven to Baltimore I experimented by driving only 55 miles per hour as much as I could. I find that I am now getting 50% more distance from a tank of gas than I would get from city driving in Chicago. I also get to relax more and see more scenery as I drive. The only down side is having people honk at me as they fly past going 75 mph. Oddly, most of the honking happens in areas marked as 55 mph zones.
The weather has been steadily improving. Last week was cold and snowy. This week is all about sunshine and snow melting. While its still not warm things are definitely improving. The nicer weather is raising my spirits a fair amount and giving me hope for the next few weeks. I am guessing I will still run into snow in Colorado, but I honestly don’t know. I’m hoping that things just keep getting warmer. Needless to say I am looking forward to warm days in Florida.
Highlights of the last week
Beer, Bourbon, and BBQ Festival.
On Friday night I went with my hosts to a fantastic festival. Though I am consuming a lot less alcohol on this trip I figured a good place to do this would be with friends at a festival devoted to drinking. Along with sampling many different beers and bourbons I also participated in a tricycle race, and a really fun game of bags.
There were a lot of things that made the event so fun besides the great company of friends.
- There was no wait to get in. While there was a line we had to get through to get to Will Call it moved really fast.
- Once I was in everything was included. All booze, food and activities were free.
- I got what I felt was a mountain of BBQ ribs with my food.
- Lots of people complimented my hair! BTW this is now faded to a hot pink.
Paper Moon restaurant.
Yesterday I went for brunch at a great local restaurant. This place is decorated with Pez dispensers, pieces of creepy dolls, and random old toys. I had a delicious Omelet and coffee.
My host took me to check out the ceramics studio where he regularly spends time. I got a great tour and met a woman named Wendy who was working on some ceramic cat images. I also got to watch a class take place. While I have never gotten into ceramics myself it was a great experience to see the beautiful pieces that others are making.
Lowlight of the last week
Mac and cheese
Along with the great ribs I had some mac and cheese. I am pretty sure this caused my stomach to fell not so great later in the evening. It seems that everyone in my group who ate the mac and cheese also had a sore stomach later. In retrospect I wish I had the coleslaw instead.
Also allergies. Or maybe its a cold. But I’m pretty sure its allergies. My nose has been running like Niagra Falls all week not. It finally seems to be submitting as I close out my time in Baltimore. I am just fortunate I had such comfortable and welcoming place to stay while I was feeling a bit under the weather.
